PARTNERING UPDATE
 In the April hardcopy PEGG, we told you
about APEGGA’s proposal
to partner with ASET in a one Act, two Association model of regulating the professions.
Since that time, we’ve received a letter from the Hon. Mike Cardinal, Alberta
Minister of Human Resources and Employment.
Minister Cardinal has suggested that APEGGA and ASET meet to discuss the merits
of this proposal with a view to seeking a mutually acceptable proposal. The Minister
has offered to appoint a mediator to assist with the discussions, should either
party request this, and has requested a report within three months.
APEGGA has responded to the Minister by thanking him for his understanding and,
in view of the timelines, formally requesting that a mediator be appointed.
APEGGA President Larry Staples, P.Eng. – in one of his last acts of
office as your 86th President – will present the APEGGA proposal at the
Annual General Meeting, Saturday, April 22. This is the same proposal presented
to the province’s Standing Policy Committee on Education and Employment
last month, which we reported in The PEGG.
The presentation is posted on the APEGGA website in
its entirety. You are invited to follow progress on this matter, and to
comment on how APEGGA and ASET can work together as self-regulation teammates
in this new and exciting era.

CONFERENCE STARTS THIS WEEK
The APEGGA Annual Conference and Annual General Meeting will soon be under
way. Conference activities run from April 19 to April 22 at the Shaw Conference
Centre in Edmonton, and include professional development seminars, the Summit
Awards gala, a member art show, a Canada/U.S. Mobility Forum, the Annual General
Meeting and more.

HOW MEMBER REGISTRATION WORKS
APEGGA’s register
grew by 4.2 per cent in 2005. For those of you without the raw figures and a
calculator handy, that works out to 1,791 new members of your Association.
More than 4,000 applications for registration were received, meaning your
Board of Examiners was extremely busy. But do you know how the board decides
which applicants become members? Do you know what policies it follows? How it
fits into self-regulation? Who its members are?
The hardcopy PEGG began a series in April to help you learn more. We anticipate
stories continuing for at least the next year.
