When we discuss APEGGA membership with new graduates and other potential members, a question often asked is, “What’s in it for me?”
The simple answer, of course, is that APEGGA provides you a licence to practice engineering, geology or geophysics, and under Alberta law, you need such a licence to practice.
But there is much more that we do. Though licensure and the enforcement of the EGGP Act make up our primary purpose, APEGGA offers a wide range of benefits and other services to its members. What’s In It For Me? is a series of articles describing these programs.
There is no question that Alberta’s economy is hot right now. Salaries for professionals are up — just check out the APEGGA salary survey online — and unemployment is down.
In these circumstances, employers often have difficulty finding qualified employees. At the same time, there are a number of APEGGA members who tell us they are having trouble finding work.
APEGGA’s solution is the Resumé Referral Service. The service is essentially an online job board that’s free to use for employers and potential employees. But it approaches this mission a little differently than the larger, commercial boards do.
First, it is dedicated to APEGGA members and permit holders, ensuring that only qualified individuals and organizations are participating. Second, APEGGA ensures that each job posting is for an actual, specific opening within an organization — there are no search firms posting imaginary positions hoping to cast their net as widely as possible. Third, the APEGGA registration status of each potential employee is clearly confirmed prior to his or her resumé being posted — no surprises for the employer. When a potential employee is a member-in-training or planning to register, this is identified in the posting.
Finally, as a member your confidentiality is assured. You can prevent your resumé from going to any firm you don’t want it to go to.
Complementing the referral service is a print version of many of the posted jobs and job seeker notices. This appears in every edition of The PEGG, alongside paid ads seeking APEGGA professionals.
In addition to the job board, APEGGA provides you access to a wide range of resources to help you in your search for employment or in your recruiting efforts. If you are a member looking for work or if you are a permit holder looking for a qualified professional, surf over to the APEGGA Resumé Referral Service at www.apegga.org or check out the Careers section of this month’s PEGG, starting on page 21.
