STUDENT COLUMNS

All Events Great and Small

Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.

Malcolm Forbes
Now that the school year has begun in earnest, I thought that I would provide PEGG readers with an update of the events taking place this term (and a little beyond).

Student Travels
At the student level, planning for the Western Inter-University Geoscience Conference to take place in January is well underway. We are pleased to announce that the keynote speaker will be Dr. Philip Currie, a renowned expert in vertebrate paleontology.

Between 300 and 400 students from the four western provinces are expected to attend, and we are working hard to ensure that they will have a great experience here in Calgary.

The winter term will be a very busy time at the university, since, in addition to the conference, the Rock for the Gallagher fundraiser will take place in February instead of on its traditional October date.
The highlight of the fall season for the Geophysics Undergraduate Student Society has been to send graduating geophysics students to the 75th Society of Exploration Geophysicists conference in Houston this November. This has been a very exciting project to organize, and will provide the attendees with a great overview of the current research and opportunities in the world of exploration geophysics.

On a local level, we are supplementing on-campus education with a number of industry field trips in and around Calgary.

Geo-Movies
On a lighter note, mark your calendars for this cinematic event: the Department of Geology and Geophysics has started a new tradition with the Geoscience Movie Night. Every month the department will screen a geoscience-themed movie – suitable for all ages. The first offering, The Tsunami that Shook the World, was shown in September to great acclaim.

Admission is free and snacks are available for purchase, with the proceeds going to charity. Students, staff and the general public are invited to attend. Please consult the link below for current listings and location information.

As you can see, there is no lack of opportunities to help students and everyone else open their minds to the many facets of the geosciences!
