
Awarded to members who have served their profession diligently for many years
and who have
made substantial contributions to the operation of the Association and the advancement
of its
professional status.
A native Glaswegian, Mr. D. Stewart McIntosh, P.Eng., studied at The Stow College of Engineering, the Glasgow Royal Technical College and the Paisley Technical College prior to receiving his Higher National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering and the requirements for membership in the Institution of Mechanical Engineers of Great Britain.
Mr. McIntosh began his engineering career in 1941 as a student engineering apprentice and then a junior engineer with a firm in Renfrew, Scotland. In 1947, he accepted an engineering position in Calgary where he remained until 1951. From 1951- 1953 he worked for a mining and smelting company in Trail, B.C., before moving to Edmonton to work with Northwest Industries Ltd.
Mr. McIntosh became an APEA (now APEGGA) member on November 23, 1954. He was awarded Life Membership with APEGGA in April 1986. In the intervening years, he made a career and a name for himself in business and industry in Alberta and in 1984 retired as President of the Northern and Central Gas Corporation (Norcen Energy Resources). He joined the staff of APEGGA in 1987.
During his 17-year career with APEGGA Mr. McIntosh contributed much, first as Director of Professional Practice responsible for the Discipline Committee; then Practice Standards; Practice Review Board; Joint Board of Practice; and most recently as Director of Special Projects.
Mr. McIntosh retired from APEGGA in
September 2004 and passed away in
January 2005.

This award is named for Mr. Lionel C. Charlesworth, P.Eng., APEGGA President, 1924. Mr. Charlesworth was appointed Deputy Minister of Alberta Public Works in 1915 and also served as Deputy Minister of Railways and Telephones until 1921. Until his retirement in 1945, he devoted his life to the highly important work of irrigation in southern Alberta and was instrumental in establishing the Eastern District in 1935.
