THE FRANK SPRAGINS TECHNICAL AWARD

DR. JACOB H. MASLIYAH, p.ENG.

Dr. Jacob Masliyah, P.Eng., is a distinguished member of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta. He received his B.Sc. (Chemical Engineering) in 1964 from University College London, an M.Sc. (Chemical Engineering) in 1966 from the University of New Brunswick and a PhD (Chemical Engineering) in 1970 from the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Masliyah has worked in a number of research areas, starting with fluid dynamics, evolving into fluid-particle dynamics and his current focus is in the area of colloidal dynamics. He seeks active
collaboration and participation with researchers and at present has a very large group of researchers working with him in many areas related to oil sand extraction science and technology.

He currently holds an NSERC Industrial Chair in oil sands and is also the holder of a Canada Research Chair. His research is supported by a large number of oil sands operators through the NSERC Chair program. He is the recipient of the NSERC University- Industry Synergy award.

Dr. Masliyah directs researchers in the Syncrude Canada Research Centre and at the University of Alberta. Working closely with these researchers, he has established a first-rate laboratory in the area of interfacial science and applied it successfully to understand the basic processes governing
bitumen recovery from oil sands.

He also directs theoretical and fundamental research with the help of visiting research fellows from Russia, Bulgaria and other Eastern European countries. His lab is so well-established internationally that top researchers in this field visit the lab routinely. Dr. Masliyah has put Alberta on the world map of colloidal research.

This award is named for Mr. Frank Spragins, P.Eng., APEGGA President, 1975. Mr. Spragins was a driving force behind the Syncrude heavy oil sands project which is recognized as the largest industrial project ever to be undertaken in Canada. His personal qualities of vigour, imagination, courage and endurance, as well as his negotiating skills, were critical to its success.
