This award is presented to Members of APEGGA in recognition of an outstanding contribution they have made to society.
Dr. Peter C. Flynn, P.Eng., has made outstanding contributions to the engineering community, the community at large, and to the education of undergraduate and graduate students. Over the course of his career, he has acted as an outstanding public ambassador for the engineering profession. He has been interviewed and consulted on several topics and always showcases the work of Professional Engineers and the positive impact they have upon society.
He spent 25 years in Canada’s energy industry. As a community-minded Professional Engineer, Dr. Flynn contributed through involvement in the Canadian Society of Chemical Engineering (CSChE) and the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC). He has served on local and national boards of CSChE and served three years on the board of CIC. He also served as a director of the Petroleum Services Association of Canada, of EPCOR, and of an independent power producer, Plutonic Power Corporation.
Dr. Flynn returned to the University of Alberta in 1999 and revamped the teaching of financial management and investment analysis to undergraduate engineering students. In addition to carrying a full teaching and research load, he has overseen the revitalization of the Engineering Management program in the Faculty of Engineering. There are now 100 students in the program. It attracts graduate-level students seeking professional development in the area of management and has been a significant contribution to the engineering profession in Alberta.
In addition to his contributions to the professional engineering community, Dr. Flynn has dedicated much of his energy and time to serving the broader community. He was appointed by the Province to serve as a board member of the Balancing Pool of Alberta, an organization that plays a key role in the functioning of deregulated power within the province. He was similarly appointed by the Province to the board of the Informatics Circle of Research Excellence (iCORE), a provincially-created entity mandated to attract high-caliber researchers in the fields of informatics and communication technology.
As a member of the Fort Edmonton Foundation, Dr. Flynn played a key role in developing business models for the three most recent additions to the park and is currently managing the proposed
re-creation of the Lafleche Clothing Manufacturing and Retail building.
He also dedicates time to serving those in need. He is a long-standing member of the board of the Capital Region Housing Corporation (CRHC), which operates 5,500 units for low-income individuals and families. He was instrumental in CRHC’s initiative to build and own 400 additional units of affordable housing. Years ago, as the president of Edmonton’s Norwood Neighborhood Association, Dr. Flynn organized an initiative that led to a substantial Neighborhood Improvement Program grant that had a lasting impact on the community.
