The Council may confer Honorary Membership in APEGGA upon any person who, through initiative and leadership, has rendered eminent service allied with the professions. The nominee’s work will have contributed to the betterment of society through the development of new material, equipment, techniques, philosophy or management related to engineering, geology or geophysics.
Ms Wendy Cooper, through her work at Consulting Engineers of Alberta (CEA) and with leaders in other engineering-related associations across Canada, continues to make a significant contribution to the advancement of the engineering profession both provincially and nationally.
For many years, she has worked to raise awareness of the contribution Professional Engineers make in Alberta. Her hard work and determination have made a positive impact in the engineering community and with business, government and the public. Her dedication was recently recognized by Premier Stelmach who commended Ms Cooper for her “tireless support of the consulting engineering industry”.
She is an advocate for both the advancement of consulting engineering in Alberta and the way that engineering projects are viewed. She was instrumental in the creation of a sustainability fund which helps protect the government’s program and infrastructure spending plans from unexpected drops in revenue and the costs of emergencies or disasters. In 2006 and 2008, Ms Cooper brought together competing consulting engineering firms for a recruiting tour of the UK. Most of those recruited are applicants or have already been licenced as P.Eng.s.
Ms Cooper’s dedication also extends to building the future of engineering through initiatives such as CEA’s Young Professionals Group. She also led the drive to create and operate the Transportation Infrastructure Career Development Program. It provides engineering co-op students with work experiences with a consulting firm, Alberta Transportation and a road-building contractor. She has also worked on two consulting engineering national task forces to develop awareness and excitement amongst high school and university students about opportunities in the consulting engineering industry.
One of her key goals remains establishing and maintaining good working relationships with other provincial consulting engineering associations and other organizations including APEGGA. She has a strong commitment to promoting how Professional Engineers create wealth and contribute to the well-being of society.
