This pool is for those participants who are employed. The focus is on assistance from a mentor in relation to development of workplace related soft skills such as communication, time management, teamwork, negotiation, conflict resolution and planning and organization to name a few.
Protégés and mentors work on a mutually agreed upon meeting schedule and achievement of the goals the protégé has set for the partnership. It is recommended that a protégé start with 1-3 goals with action plans for reaching those goals. Once success is achieved in these areas, he can move on to any other identified goals. New grads and foreign trained engineers and geoscientists learn from each other and the benefits to both parties are substantial. A degree is the basis for technical skills, but there is so much more involved in being a success in the workplace.
It is important to note that the APEGGA MENTORING PROGRAM focuses on soft skill development. These are the skills that you do not “pick up” in a university. Therefore, it is critical to have that special mentor who can help lead you through growth in soft skill in the workplace. We all have had mentors who we remember as the key to our success in our work life. We just do not make it without those special people who contribute to our growth. Who are the special people in your life? Was it a teacher, a friend, a co-worker? The effect they have on our lives is usually very great…even though we don’t always recognize that until we are older and wiser.
It is also important to note that we will need different mentors at different times in our lives. A mentor is not “one person who fits all occasions”. Remember that they are those unique professionals who care about their fellow professionals and want to give back to their communities. Mentors have experience and knowledge to share with you that will most surely contribute to your growth and development as a professional and as a human being. Mentoring is the key to developing future leaders and to encouraging on-going sharing or “paying it forward” for your successors. Mentors are inspirational ..…..they are like having your own personal Aladdin who can say “I am here to answer all of your questions and help you obtain all that you desire.” (adapted from Jack Canfield and Mark Hansen, The Aladdin Factor.
