Concrete Toboggan Race

Clips of Careening Concrete

We’ve uploaded YouTube clips of the national Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race, which APEGGA supported as a race day sponsor. The University of Alberta Faculty of Engineering hosted the Jan. 29 event. The APEGGA sponsorship is part of APEGGA’s commitment to strengthening relationships with engineering students, engineers-in-training and young professional members. APEGGA also demonstrates this commitment through its Engineering Student Project Funds at U of A and the University of Calgary’s Schulich School of Engineering. This year, Jim Smith, P.Eng., APEGGA President-Elect, participated in the awards gala for the concrete toboggan race. Overall 2011 champion, from the Schulich school at U of C, put a portion of the Engineering Student Project Fund towards its entry.

Professional Practice

Digital Signatures for Authenticating Electronic Documents

APEGGA members have long had the option to issue professional documents in electronic form as long as the process they used met the requirements outlined in the Practice Standard for Authenticating Professional Documents. None of those requirements have changed, except for one – the source from which members may obtain a digital signature. Effective April 1, the only digital signature that will be acceptable for APEGGA members signing their stamps on electronic documents will be the one obtained through APEGGA.

Just as APEGGA does not manufacture and distribute traditional ink stamps, neither does it distribute the digital signatures/certificates. Instead, the Association has entered into an agreement with Notarius Inc. to provide the necessary services. Members apply to APEGGA for their digital signatures and APEGGA will authorize Notarius to issue those to the members. Notarius partners with and provides digital signature kits for 11 associations that represent more than 160,000 professionals from coast to coast, including the Ordre des ingénieurs du Quebec, the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba.

Notarius and APEGGA have packaged a promotion enabling firms to implement pilot projects and see the benefits for themselves. To find out more about this promotion, contact Notarius at sales@notarius.com or call 1-888-588-0011.

Revised Stamping Guideline

APEGGA's Practice Standards Committee has prepared the near-final draft of version 3.0 of the Practice Standard for Authenticating Professional Documents. The revised document provides more clarity and additional information on stamping procedures and management of engineering and geoscience documents.

Before completing its final draft, the Committee would welcome any comments that may help to improve the document. Deadline for comments is March 18.
