|
The results of the professional member ballot on amending the EGGP Act as
per the Memorandum of Understanding between APEGGA and ASET were announced in
a joint news release issued Wednesday, April 11.
Additional information on how members voted is now available.
- Of the 34,547 professional members eligible to vote,
5,657 chose to exercise their right to vote on the special ballot. That’s
16.4 per cent.
- Of the ballots cast, 4,273 (75.5 per cent) voted “yes” to
the question “Should The Engineering, Geological and Geophysical Professions
Act be amended to create a one Act, two Associations regulatory model, as per
the Memorandum of Understanding signed by ASET and APEGGA on December 18, 2006?”
- There were 1,384, (24.4 per cent) “no” votes
cast. Spoiled ballots accounted for just over two per cent of the ballots cast.
- It is interesting to note that on average 15 to 20 per cent
of professional members exercise their privilege in the annual Council elections.
The ASET membership similarly endorsed the MOU in a
separate ballot held at the same time as the APEGGA balloting. ASET tallied 2,660
votes (94 per cent) endorsing the Memorandum of Understanding and 170 votes (six
per cent) against.

ONLINE SURVEY
Canadian Standards Association Wants
Engineering Perspective
The Canadian Standards Association invites professional
engineers to participate in a short and confidential online survey. The aim is
to gain insights from a professional engineering perspective into the state of
awareness about the challenges a changing climate poses for Canada’s civil
infrastructure.
If you practice engineering in any of the infrastructure categories below,
it is particularly important that you participate.
-
Transportation: roads, highways, associated drainage systems, airports and
runways
-
Buildings: structures, climatic loads, building envelope, geotechnical, building
systems
-
Water: drinking water, storm water, erosion, flood control, waste water
-
Energy: transmission, distribution and hydro generation.
The Canadian Standards Association believes that the
survey will be useful in many ways. It will help to facilitate initiatives to
ensure that Canada’s
professional engineers are properly equipped to deal with significant national
issues such as climate change, and resilient, adequate Civil Infrastructure.
