These environmentally friendly lawn care practices reduce waste, fertilizer and chemical needs, conserve water, and save money through reduced energy and yard maintenance costs. They also help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. By practicing each of the following tips, you can save over $100 a year and reduce your household GHG emissions by up to ¾ of a tonne per year. Eco-Landscaping Tips Xeriscape by incorporating native, drought-resistant plants into your landscape. Xeriscaping is a method of gardening that involves choosing plants that are appropriate to their site and creating a landscape that can be maintained with little supplemental watering. Plant deciduous trees on the south side of your house for shade and evergreens along the northwest as a wind break. Collect rainwater for irrigation. Water in the morning or evening to reduce water losses to evaporation. Backyard compost fruits, vegetables and yard waste to produce your own soil conditioner. Mulch around outdoor plants with compost, shredded bark or other organic materials to help retain moisture. Grass-cycle by leaving grass clippings on the lawn when you mow. It helps retain moisture, add nutrients and reduce the need for fertilizers. Use a push or electric mower to further reduce your GHG emissions.
