Vol. 7, No. 5 Thursday, May 20, 2010 Climate Change Adaptation Session Videos In April, APEGGA's Climate Change Adaptation Sub-Committee organized and video recorded a two-day session Adapting to Climate Change for Engineers and Geoscientists, during the Annual Conference. The first day’s presentations included specifics on what municipalities are doing to adapt, how the insurance industry is coping with the devastating effects from storms and droughts, and more. Day two was an introduction to assess the vulnerability of infrastructure based on a protocol created by Engineers Canada. This session is of interest to engineers involved in the design, operation, maintenance and management of infrastructure. The presentations and videos are available here for your information and learning. Watch the Videos Scientists & Engineers Scientists & Engineers-In-The-Classroom Program Recruitment of volunteers is now underway for the Scientists & Engineers-in-the-Classroom program which starts in September 2010 in Calgary and Edmonton. Freshwater degradation is a looming crisis that we must face with strong and effective actions. Less than 1 per cent of Earth's water is freshwater – we must protect this critical resource. Your individual water footprint is equal to the water required to produce the goods and services consumed by you. What is your water footprint? Go here to find out. Here are some ideas and ways to reduce your water usage Set specific water reduction goals – for example, commit to using 20 per cent less per month Determine a baseline to start reducing from. Print the energy and water consumption chart and post in a visible spot in your home. Chart the number of gallons of water used in the last 12 months (for comparison to each month this year) Make specific changes in products used and family member habits Buy water saving products where needed Get your family involved by asking for specific changes in everyone's habits (e.g., place signs near water outlets reminding family members to reduce consumption (e.g., shorter showers, turning the faucet off when not needed, only watering outdoor plants in the morning or evening).
