Golf, Golf, More Golf The APEGGA Edmonton and Calgary branches would like to invite you to their annual golf tournaments. These two well respected and fun tournaments will be held on Sept. 4 at the Cougar Creek Golf Resort in Edmonton and Sept. 10 at the Lynx Ridge Golf Club in Calgary. This is a great opportunity to network with your fellow colleagues. For more information on these tournaments, and to register online please click here. Please hurry as space is limited! 2009 Value of Professional Services Employers Please Support This Important Initiative! Salary Survey providers afford relevant information about current salaries available to their professionals. APEGGA needs this as input to continue improving the statistical weight of this popular and highly regarded survey. For more information on how to participate in this year’s survey, please visit www.apegga.org Environment Committee Tip of the Month Driving and Car Maintenance Driving Tips Idling gets you 0 miles per gallon. The best way to warm up a vehicle is to drive it. No more than 30 seconds of idling on winter days is needed. Anything more simply wastes fuel and increases emissions. Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration, and hard braking) wastes gas. It can lower your highway gas mileage 33 per cent and city mileage 5 per cent Avoid high speeds. Above 100 km/h, gas mileage drops rapidly. Clear out your car; extra weight decreases gas mileage by one to two per cent for every 45 kg. Reduce drag by placing items inside the car or trunk rather than on roof racks. A roof rack or carrier provides additional cargo space and may allow you to buy a smaller car. However, a loaded roof rack can decrease your fuel economy by 5 per cent or more. Check into telecommuting, carpooling and public transit to cut mileage and car maintenance costs. Car Maintenance Tips Use the grade of motor oil recommended by your car's manufacturer. Using different motor oil can lower your gasoline mileage by 1 to 2 per cent. Keep tires properly inflated and aligned to improve your gasoline mileage by around 3.3 per cent. Get regular engine tune-ups and car maintenance checks to avoid fuel economy problems due to worn spark plugs, dragging brakes, low transmission fluid, or transmission problems. Replace clogged air filters to improve gas mileage by as much as 10 per cent and protect your engine. Combine errands into one trip. Several short trips, each one taken from a cold start, can use twice as much fuel as one trip covering the same distance when the engine is warm. Adapting Infrastructure to a Changing Climate PIEVC’s Engineering Protocol Engineers Canada, with its Public Infrastructure Engineering Vulnerability Committee (PIEVC), has drafted a step-by-step process to assess the impact of climate change of infrastructure. PIEVC is supported by infrastructure expert working groups consisting of engineers and other technical experts with design and operations experience in the particular infrastructure category as well as climate scientists and other subject matter experts. Engineers Canada is currently looking for volunteers for these expert working groups. PIEVC currently has four such groups to assess these categories of infrastructure: 1. Buildings 2. Roads and associated structures 3. Stormwater and wastewater treatment and collection systems 4. Water resource systems and other water management infrastructures. Engineers Canada is also creating a knowledge base of case studies. Any vulnerable built infrastructure from the province is eligible to be assessed. More information For further detailed information on the protocol, to volunteer to be on one of the expert working groups, or to provide selections of case studies, please contact: David Lapp, P.Eng. CALL FOR PAPERS International Symposium on Disaster Risk Management The World Federation of Engineering Organizations, the Japan Federation of Engineering Societies, and the Japan Society of Civil Engineers are calling for papers on disaster risk management as part of their 2009 Joint International Symposium. The task group from Japan that is organizing this is part of the WFEO Standing Committee on Engineering and the Environment, which Engineers Canada chairs through Darrel Danyluk, P.Eng. As a part of activities of the Task Group, this Symposium is being held to showcase state-of-the-art technologies, information and discuss measures to prevent, reduce and adapt to risks of water-related and earthquake-related disasters. Information and opinions will be exchanged on the above mentioned disaster risk management and will introduce knowledge and experience to avoid disasters and promote sustainable and sound development.
