Scientists & Engineers-In-The-Classroom Program

Recruitment of volunteers is now underway for the Scientists & Engineers-in-the-Classroom program, starting in September 2010 in Calgary and Edmonton. In the future, the program will be extended to other areas. This newly merged program of APEGGA and the Alberta Science Literacy Association is an exciting opportunity to increase science outreach to more Alberta students. Professional Practice Department

Volunteer Positions Available

APEGGA's Professional Practice Department is looking for experienced APEGGA members to fill vacancies on committees and boards.

Most positions are three-year terms. Volunteers are expected to attend committee meetings regularly – approximately six to eight times per year. Meetings are normally one-half day each. Meeting locations alternate between APEGGA's Edmonton and Calgary offices and are also conducted by video conference. Occasional travel will be required to attend face-to-face meetings. Authorized travel expenses will be reimbursed. In addition to meeting attendance, volunteers will be required to commit time to certain additional duties, depending on the committee.

Summaries of the committees' activities can be found in the Annual Reports section of APEGGA's website. The website also provides each committee's terms of reference.

Networking Fair Needs Women Role Models
Edmonton Area

WISEST invites women in science, engineering and technology to participate as role models in the Networking Fair held for high school students enrolled in its Summer Research Program. These students are considering careers in science, engineering, technology, and medicine. Past role models have found their interactions with high school students to be enriching and energizing. They also appreciate the opportunity to network with other women professionals.

Monday, July 26th
Coffee Hour (optional): 2 to 2:45 p.m.
Networking Fair: 3 to 4:30 p.m.
Location: University of Alberta (site to be advised)

The Networking Fair is informal and personal. You will participate in a small group discussion with two or three other role models and four to six high school students. Each role model will speak briefly on aspects of her career or life story, respond to questions, and participate in group discussion. Further details will be provided to role models as the fair date approaches.

To participate as a role model, contact Kerry or Lynn at WISEST at wisest@ualberta.ca or call 780-492-7774 by June 24.
