New Geoscience Guidelines

APEGGA's Practice Standards Committee has recently issued two new geoscience guidelines. Both documents can be found on APEGGA's website by selecting Regulatory/Practice Standards from the main navigation menu.

The Guideline for Ethical Use of Geophysical Data was developed in response to issues concerning the business use of licensed geophysical data in the oil and gas industry. In this context, licensed geophysical data is data that one party obtains from another party under an agreement to use, but not own, the data. The issues centre mainly on what parties can or cannot do with the licensed data, e.g., share the data with partners, show the data to third parties, demand data transfer payments, etc.

Determining the Need for Professional Involvement in Outsourced Geoscience focuses on geological and geophysical work that is outsourced to entities or individuals who are not licensed in Alberta. The guideline helps to clarify the regulatory requirements for the involvement of Alberta-licensed geoscientists regarding work that will be used in the province of Alberta.

The Great Reusable Coffee Mug Debate

Do you take it black? Or do you take it fancy? No matter how you take it, your java needs a mug. Do you feel a little guilty when you don't bring a reusable mug to the coffee shop? Not to worry; you can save some of that guilt. Reusable mugs aren't much better than disposable ones in environmental terms...once you factor in the energy it takes to make a durable cup and the energy, water and detergent it takes to wash it.

If you do go reusable, what's your eco-friendliest choice — stainless steel, plastic, ceramic or...corn plastic? This is an interesting topic that is explored below. Now, grab a fresh cup of coffee and expand your mind with the facts.

• Buying one cup of coffee every day in a disposable paper container means you're generating 10 kg of waste annually.

• Styrofoam is recyclable — but most recycling facilities don't accept it. It also pelletizes instead of fully degrading, which makes it harmful to marine life after it's been dumped at sea.

But any accurate analysis of a product's impact has to be done over that product's entire lifecycle. From that standpoint, reusable cups and Styrofoam cups are basically an environmental wash...unless you reuse the reusable cups a lot.
