The Long Lake Project

Time:  Registration: 11:15 a.m., Luncheon: 11:45 a.m., AGM 12:15 p.m., Speaker:  12:30 p.m.

Location:  The Westin, 320 4th Avenue SW

Cost:  $35 Members and Guests, $17  Students

Guest Speaker:  Gary Nieuwenburg, P.Eng., Nexen Inc.

Located 40 km southeast of Fort McMurray, the Long Lake Project is the fourth and next major integrated oil sands project in Canada. The Project combines SAGD recovery with proprietary upgrading technologies which will allow the joint venture partners (Nexen Inc and OPTI Canada) to produce a premium sweet synthetic crude oil at a significant cost advantage over competitive technologies. These savings are largely the result of using OrCrudeTM and Gasification technology to gasify the least valuable portion of the bitumen barrel (asphaltenes) to create a synthetic fuel gas thus largely eliminating the need for externally purchased natural gas.

The first phase of Long Lake is currently under construction with first steam for SAGD expected in late 2006, followed by Upgrader startup in 2007. Once operational, the project will produce just under 60,000 barrels per day of premium synthetic crude.

Nexen has an estimated 5 billion barrels of resource that is recoverable utilizing the technologies being employed at Long Lake. Our phased development plans are scheduled to increase our share of production to 120,000 barrels per day within the next decade.
