Guest Speaker:    Ian MacGregor, Enhance Energy Inc

Alberta has approximately 1.7 trillion barrels of oil sands potential of which approximately 185 billion barrels are recognized as proven under current SEC regulations. Conventional oil and gas have passed their peak production and the energy future of the Province is tied directly to production of oil sands.

Oil sands production will be constrained by carbon dioxide emissions. Sagd bitumen when converted to fuels is about 2.5 times as CO2 intensive as conventional light oil. Alberta has the geology to effectively manage CO2 emissions by using them as a feedstock for enhanced oil recovery. EOR will allow depleted reservoirs in southern Alberta to be revitalized and return to their initial production rates. It has been estimated that there are more than 1 billion barrels of light oil to be recovered in southern Alberta using CO2 and enhanced oil recovery. Ironically although Alberta is a very large CO2 emitter most of the CO2 that is produced is contaminated with nitrogen as a result of combustion. EOR requires pure CO2.

Mr. MacGregor is Chairman of Enhance Energy and North West Upgrading which have developed an integrated approach to CO2 management for central Alberta. He will speak on what effective CO2 management means and how it can be implemented cost effectively in the Province leading to the growth of the EOR industry and the evolution of sustainable refining and petrochemical industries in the province based on Alberta’s proprietary geological advantages.

To ensure adequate seating please preregister with the Calgary APEGGA Office at 262-7714 or register online prior to Wednesday, May 13, 2009. The Calgary Branch accepts Visa, MasterCard, or American Express.
