Guest Speaker:    Bill Heins, GE Water & Process Technologies / Resources Conservation Co. International (RCCI)

Over the past 40 years, there have been numerous advances in the implementation of zero liquid discharge technology in a wide variety of industries and applications.  Planning to implement zero liquid discharge right from the start wins faster community acceptance, streamlines the permitting process, eliminates the need for deep well injection or other disposal methods, and minimizes make-up water requirements.  Over 120 mechanical zero liquid discharge systems are now in operation worldwide using RCC® Brine Concentrators, Crystallizers, and Dryers, including three zero liquid discharge SAGD heavy oil recovery projects currently operating in Alberta.

Wastewater is converted by the Brine Concentrator to extremely pure distilled water for reuse in the steam generator or other process applications.  The waste from the Brine Concentrator is reduced to dry solids in the Crystallizer and / or Dryer, while recovering the remaining wastewater for reuse.  Membrane processes, such as reverse osmosis and electrodialysis reversal, can also be used in some cases as a pre-concentration step, minimizing the size and energy consumption of the Brine Concentrator.

This presentation will discuss the various applications of Brine Concentrators and Crystallizers, especially as they apply to SAGD heavy oil recovery produced water treatment. Specific examples will be used to illustrate the wastewater recycling process and demonstrate how the zero liquid discharge system is integrated into the overall process.

To ensure adequate seating please pre-register with the Calgary APEGGA Office at 262-7714 prior to Friday, May 11, 2007.  Calgary Branch accepts Visa, MasterCard, or American Express for tickets sold prior to the day of the event.
