Widening and Rehabilitation of the Quesnell Bridge
The Quesnell Bridge was first opened to traffic in late 1968 as part of the original Whitemud Drive project.
The bridge was initially configured to carry three lanes westbound and two lanes eastbound and included
a 4 metre wide multi-use sidewalk. Today, the Quesnell Bridge carries six lanes of traffic and is the
busiest bridge in Edmonton, carrying approximately 120,000 vehicles per day. During the preliminary
design phase of the project, the City and its consultants determined that to improve safety and increase
the number of vehicles traveling over the bridge that the roadway would need to be widened from the
current six lanes with reduced shoulders to eight lanes with full 3.5 metre shoulders. A detailed
assessment of the bridge also determined that the concrete bridge deck was badly deteriorated and that
the existing girders were overstressed for current day vehicle loads and that a major bridge rehabilitation
should be included as part of the Quesnell Bridge project.
