THE NEW PARK BRIDGE

TIME: Registration: 11:15 a.m., Luncheon: 11:45 a.m., Speaker: 12:15 p.m.

GUEST SPEAKER: Hugh Hawk, P.Eng., Delcan Corporation

The Kicking Horse Canyon Highway Improvement Project is improving safety, reliability and adding capacity to a critical east-west trade corridor between B.C. and Alberta, and more broadly linking B.C.’s ports to all destinations east. Commercial carriers make up a large portion of the traffic, (nearly 5 times the provincial average) but it is also a route frequented by tourists and residents of the region.

This section of the highway has one of the highest accident rates in the province, making it a top provincial transportation priority. Overall, the Kicking Horse Canyon Project involves upgrading approximately 26 kilometres of the highway to a modern, four-lane standard, including bridge replacements. The project is divided into three phases, and it is the recently completed Phase 2 that is the subject of this presentation.

With a capital cost of $130 million, Phase 2 involved the design, construction and financing of a 5.8 kilometer segment of the highway, including the replacement of the Park Bridge. The new road and bridge was officially opened on August 30, 2007.

Construction was completed 21 months ahead of schedule and included an additional 2 km of road construction as a benefit to the project. The 3 km of abandoned highway has now been converted to a recreation trail providing views of the Kicking Horse River and the new bridge.

The new 404 metre long Park Bridge is the only incrementally launched curved girder bridge in North America. It also has the highest piers in BC for a steel girder bridge at 90 metres. The rock cuts at the east end of the bridge are also 90 metres high; the highest for a bridge approach in B.C.

To ensure adequate seating, please register with the Calgary APEGGA Office at 262-7714, or by email at calgevents@apega.ca prior to Friday, September 5. Calgary Branch accepts Visa, MasterCard, or American Express.
