In today’s world, there are more ongoing projects than ever before. The substantial economic growth Alberta is currently experiencing can mostly be accredited to the boom in the demand for oil which has directly impacted the number of oilsands projects undertaken.

Alberta continues to experience an overwhelming increase in population as more and more people migrate to the west to capitalize on the “hot” job market and opportunities. This influx in population has triggered a chain-reaction to the increase of construction projects across Alberta in all areas i.e. housing, retail, and commercial.

Coupled with the oilsands and construction projects, there is an increased need for the latest and greatest information relating to technology to keep abreast of the growth. In order to effectively manage these existing and future projects, timelines and financial budgets need to be met and the need for skilled and knowledgeable Project Managers has become more significant.

As an engineering or geoscience professional, supervisor or manager, what are some of the challenges you are faced with as you execute a project? Emphasis will be given to the “Triple Constraint” i.e. time, cost and scope. This session will cover some of the Project Management knowledge areas and processes and attempt to examine cost overruns, how they occur and methods to ensure a successful project.
