It is well known that Alberta contains vast amounts of heavy oil and bituminous — known as “oil sands” — resources, most of which cannot be feasibly/economically recovered by mining. Therefore, in place — or “in-situ” — recovery schemes are the alternative when mining is not the answer. However, most of the in-situ commercial developments did not get underway until late 20th and early 21st century time frames, so they indeed employ leading-edge, emergent technologies. Mainly due to the these commercial developments, Canada’s oil reserves have now been ranked second in the world after Saudi Arabia, and Canada is accordingly recognized as a world leader in heavy oil and oil sands recovery technologies.

This presentation describes some of the key changes witnessed and experienced by the speaker in the course of his 32 years of involvement in Alberta’s heavy oil and oil sands industry. Among these are: advances in recovery processes and in drilling and completions technologies; advances in the geosciences, especially with respect to heavy oil and oil sands resources; evolution of the office environment generally as well as relationships between engineers and geoscientists particularly; improved practices to reduce environmental impacts; and the research and development efforts that have propelled these in-situ operations.

To ensure adequate seating please preregister with the Calgary APEGGA Office at 262-7714 or register online noting any dietary restrictions prior to Thursday, October 15, 2009. Calgary Branch accepts Visa, MasterCard, or American Express.

Global Leadership & Best Practice in Mass Transit Solutions: Case Study – London, United Kingdom

2200 – 700 2 Street SW

When:

Thursday, November 5, 2009

Time: 5:30 – 6:00 p.m. Registration and light refreshment
6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Seminar

Guest Speaker:

Panel: Neil McKendrick, Manager, Transit Planning, Calgary Transit
Guy Boston, P.Eng., Senior Vice President, CH2M Hill
Jim Hnatiuk, P.Eng., Senior Transportation Planner, CH2M Hill
Cost: $45 Members and Guests

Providing an integrated transportation solution utilizing various forms of existing mass transit infrastructure has always been a challenge faced by major cities worldwide, and as London prepares to host the world in 2012 (Summer Olympic Games) the more significant challenge has been the need to upgrade existing rail & tube (London Underground) transportation facilities to deliver the expected levels of service during and after the Games. Significant lessons can be learnt from London’s approach, by cities with LRT/mass transit expansion ambitions.

The presentation will take the audience through 6 major ongoing transportation projects in London totaling approximately $70Billion in value and with an expectation to further transform mass transit solutions in the United Kingdom’s capital city. The presentation will be wholly interactive with open discussions with the audience in reviewing global and local transportation solutions and future strategies. The impact of funding and increasing demand of mass transit solutions in Calgary and public perception of long term transit solutions will form the closing stages of the presentation & discussions.

This promises to be a very interesting overview at a global and local perspective, with significant ‘best practice’ ideas certain to emanate.

Pre-Registration and advance payments are required. Seating is limited and registrations will be dealt with on a first-come, first-serve basis.
