Coal is the most abundant carbon energy source in the world and will continue to be widely used. Its main use is power generation, but it can also be used for production of hydrogen, petrochemicals, chemicals and transportation fuels.
The utilization of coal for whatever purpose results in the production of carbon dioxide and other emissions. CO2 is the major concern that needs to be addressed for the continued high utilization of coal. There are two basic technologies to produce “cleaner coal” gasification and conventional combustion, both of which require CO2 capture and sequestration.
Gasification for several years was considered the answer to the CO2 problem, but there is now recognition that we cannot wait for a complete turnover of plants to address the CO2 concern. A strong focus is now being placed on back end carbon capture for existing plants. The presentation will discuss the various stages of development of these technologies as well as the advantages and concerns associated with them.
