The AESO filed its Long-term Transmission System Plan (the Plan) with the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) in June 2009, calling for the construction of
several critical transmission infrastructure projects and regional system reinforcements over the next 10 years to meet the current and future electricity
needs of all Albertans.
The projects identified in the Plan are currently estimated to cost $14.5 billion. While some of the projects are new, most have been studied for some time
as part of the AESO’s comprehensive long-term planning process. As a result, technical evaluations and stakeholder consultation are well advanced.
All of these projects work together to meet the long-term demand for electricity in Alberta, unlock geographic constraints for all forms of electricity
generation, including “green energy”, and reduce line losses through increased efficiency. Using technology such as high voltage-direct current
lines will minimize land-use impacts and accommodate long-term growth.
