The term “humanitarian crisis” is
used to draw our attention. With an increasing world population competing
over limited resources, conflicts,
and natural disasters, we can be overwhelmed by the magnitude of these
problems. What exactly is a humanitarian crisis? How can we use our own
limited humanitarian aid resources effectively in these crises?
Engineering in these situations presents numerous challenges, due to a
wide variety of factors such as urgency, geographical and political isolation,
security, logistics, and dynamic situations/populations. Every situation
is unique, requiring hands and resources on the ground as well as improvisation.
Water and sanitation play a vital role in the response. It is essential
in preventing disease and providing dignity to people who have lost everything
else.
Many organizations provide a means to become involved in many different
ways. The reality of a field assignment may be very different from what
we expect, with significant stress, frustration, and even boredom. You
may only realize how much you have benefited personally and professionally
after significant time and reflection. By relating our personal experiences
we can promote realistic understanding and involvement.
To ensure adequate seating, please pre-register with the Calgary APEGGA
office at 262-7714 before Monday, April 1. The Calgary Branch now accepts
Visa, MasterCard or American Express for tickets sold prior to the day
of the event. |

Overview
of Noise and Noise Abatement for Industrial Sites Professional Development
Evening
DATE: Thursday, March
31
TIME: 5:30
- 6 p.m. Registration,
6-9:30 p.m., Light Buffet and Seminar
LOCATION: APEGGA Conference
Centre,
2200 700 2nd St. S.W.
COST: $45 Per Person
FACILITATORS: Don Glover, ATCO Noise Management Ltd. National Sales Manager;
Denise LeClaire, ATCO Noise Management Ltd. Manager, Sales and Marketing
Noise management is an evolving
concern in plant design and siting as our population grows. With many
industrial plants now located near populated
areas, noise abatement is a growing consideration in engineering design.
New noise exposure limits that came into effect in Alberta on April 30,
2004, dictate “engineering controls” as the “first method” of
control.
ATCO Noise Management has developed a seminar called Overview of Noise
and Noise Abatement for Industrial Sites, designed for project engineers
and managers. Attendees will gain a greater understanding of acoustical
terminology and concepts to assist them in identifying situations where
excessive noise could negatively impact their projects. Practical acoustical
solutions by engineers who have been in the business of noise control for
close to 15 years are presented.
Session topics include:
- Descriptors used in environmental noise control and why you should be
familiar with them.
- Rules of thumb.
- Overview of sound, noise and acoustics and how this knowledge will benefit
your projects.
- Practical and cost-effective solutions for industrial noise control that
can mitigate your risk.
- Approaches to Acoustic Responsibilities.
Pre-registration and advance payments are required. Seating is limited
and registrations will be dealt with on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Please call the Calgary APEGGA office at 262-7714 to register before Monday,
March 28. The Calgary Branch accepts Visa, MasterCard or American Express.
