TOPIC: Challenges
of Industry - University
Research
and Innovation
For years we have talked about technology transfer, a knowledge-based economy,
innovation, international competition, and commercialization as the keys to a
successful economic and social future. And we still talk about these concepts,
perhaps now flavoured with the idea of partnerships and collaborations.
The reality is that in too many cases we talk well but do not act effectively.
Mr. Gilliland believes that Canada and Alberta must act to better link industries
which create jobs and wealth, with the sources of knowledge significantly located
within the academic institutions and communities. He believes that there is a
unique and critical role for engineering and geoscience professionals to ensure
that applications of new scientific and technical knowledge are identified and
developed, and that the significant investments made in academic research result
in real benefits and growth in Canadian businesses and the economy.
Some of the many challenges in fulfilling that role will be presented and
discussed.
