Athabasca Oil Sands Lowest Cost Producer
Using electrical energy to produce bitumen in-situ from the Athabasca Oil sands is proving to be a technically and economically viable option. This presentation focuses on the technical approach (ET-DSP™, Electro-Thermal Dynamic Stripping Process) that E-T Energy Ltd. has piloted to produce bitumen from its leases near Fort McMurray. Electrodes are located in the reservoir adjacent to the pay zone and current is forced to flow through the reservoir resulting in a conversion of electrical energy into heat. The heat increases the temperature of the bitumen so that it flows readily into a production well. The process has no direct green house gas emissions and uses virtually no potable water.
The economics of using electricity to produce bitumen are attractive. However, there are a number of capital and operating costs associated with the process that differ from conventional oil and gas economics. These are presented along with E-T Energy’s business model for extracting the optimum value using the ET-DSP™ in the Athabasca oil sands.
