The Road to Better Rural Infrastructure
Engineers Without Borders has been working with local partners in Ghana to improve their data and infrastructure planning capabilities. We believe that this will enable our partners to better meet the water, road, education and health care needs of communities in Ghana. In the past, decisions have often been made by bureaucratic processes and inaccurate or absent data, and decision-makers generally have a fragmented understanding of what rural communities need. Having identified these as root causes of widespread infrastructure failure, Engineers Without Borders volunteers are testing new approaches to evidence-based planning, and scaling up ideas that create positive impact. We are working in conjunction with local partners to create surveys, analyze trends, and aggregate existing data to get a better picture of where infrastructure is needed most. In doing so, we are improving the data analysis and critical thinking skills of district employees. We would like to share with you some of our successes, as well as learning.
