APEGGA Celebrates Leading Change At Annual Conference

In an environment marked by rapid change, the innovation so intrinsic to the engineering, geology and geophysics professions is of paramount importance. The theme of the 2009 APEGGA Annual Conference is Leading Change — a celebration of the ways that professional engineers, geologists and geophysicists contribute, as leaders, to their professions and the larger community.

You, our members, strive for excellence as you explore possibilities, create solutions and lead change.

Leadership is also about personalizing professionalism. It’s about a sense of engagement with your professions and your Association. That’s where the APEGGA Annual General Meeting and Annual Conference come in.

This year’s events take place at Calgary’s TELUS Convention Centre and the Fairmont Palliser Hotel from April 23 to 25. Join your professional colleagues for three days filled with opportunities to contribute to your professional Association and involve yourself in networking, career-building and social activities.

Kicking off the conference are professional development seminars. Offered over the first two days, these seminars will cover a range of topics, including several business-related streams, a newly developed green energy stream and the Executive Track program.

“The professional development sessions in the green energy stream have the perfect mix of topics dealing with opportunities for development of green energy, challenges facing the planet and the future of technology,” says Glenn Sorokan, P.Eng., Assistant Director, Professional Practice, and the Environment Committee staff liaison. “The two days give an excellent introduction and show how much of an impact APEGGA’s professionals have on the development of energy sources.”

The PD sessions culminate in the Summit Awards Gala. Held the evening of Thursday, April 23, this black-tie gala recognizes the achievements of APEGGA’s professional members. Individuals and corporate members will be honoured for their outstanding professional, technical and community service achievements.

The eighth annual APEGGA Art Show will showcase the creative talents of members and their families during the reception prior to the gala.

Friday evening’s social program, From APEGGA with Love, invites participants to pull out their spy-wear and report to the Fairmont Palliser Hotel, dressed to kill, for an evening of James Bond-themed fun. Good food and good times will be had, and great memories will be made. Remember, You Only Live Twice, so seize this opportunity to have some fun as you unwind and network with colleagues.

During Saturday’s Annual General Meeting, members get directly involved in the business of the Association. The AGM is the primary component of the conference, and members are encouraged to attend on Saturday, April 25, to vote on some matters, hear about important issues relating to running the Association and governing the professions, and even present and pass resolutions for Council consideration. The AGM luncheon will be held following the meeting.

Opportunities to participate, both on individual and corporate levels, are plentiful at the conference. Permit holders and others are invited to partner with APEGGA to sponsor the event. Sponsoring organizations build their profile while helping APEGGA stage an exceptional annual conference.
