Foundation Charts Ambitious Course

DONE DEAL
Schulich School of Engineering Dean Elizabeth Cannon, P.Eng., left, presents a gift to APEGGA Education Foundation President Ashok Sehgal, P.Eng. The school’s reception included the announcement of a half-million-dollar endowment from the foundation to the university.

Plans to raise more APEGGA Education Foundation dollars and leverage their impact are moving forward. The foundation, which operates at arms-length from the Association itself, came out of a recent strategy session with the goal of increasing annual fundraising to $500,000 in five years, APEGGA Council heard Dec. 4 in Calgary.

Currently the foundation raises about $200,000 a year. It hopes to convince more members to donate and more companies to match staff donations.

The evening of Dec. 4, guests of a reception at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel heard that the foundation has endowed $500,000 to the University of Calgary for scholarships, bursaries and outreach programs in geoscience and engineering. A similar arrangement with the University of Alberta will likely be announced in February.

This endowment was driven by the universities’ ability to match the funds through the Alberta Government’s Access to the Future Fund.
