It’s evident that no one at the University of Calgary is standing still in 2007. Not only are there big changes afoot for the Geology and Geophysics Department, as outlined last month, but students are taking every chance to enhance their educational experiences.
WIUGC 2007 Winnipeg
Third-year geology student Cory Meeuwissen, an APEGGA student member, was the
organizer of the U of C contingent that attended this year’s Western
Inter-University Geoscience Conference in Winnipeg. He reports that this year’s
WIUGC was “a great success. We sent a total of 10 students, and every
one of them said they had a good time.”
Cory continues: “Attending the tour to the Rice Lake Gold Mine in Bissett was a highlight of the trip, as many of us had never been in a mine before, much less a gold mine. It was an informative and worthwhile excursion, and we learned much about every step of the gold mining process. The student and industry talks were also very in depth and informative.”
The evening events were well received and supported, and the final banquet on Saturday night was a quality event, made even better by an address called Geoscience for the Needs of Society, by keynote speaker Dr. Harvey Thorleifson.
The University of Manitoba committee “should be congratulated for organizing this year’s event,” Cory says. “All in all, it was a great conference, and we expect next year’s edition in Edmonton to live up to the bar set by Manitoba this year.”
AAPG 2007 Long Beach
Geology grad student Mark Radomski is coordinating the first-ever U of C student
trip to the 2007 annual convention and exhibition of the American Association
of Petroleum Geologists. This event runs from April 1-4 in Long Beach, Calif.
He expects to take eight to 12 grad and undergrad students to this world-class geological symposium. “Our fundraising efforts have been very successful so far, as we are more than halfway to our goal. I think this a great event for students to attend.”

Not to be outdone, geophysics students are starting their planning for the
2007 Society of Exploration Geophysicists Conference in San Antonio, Tex.,
in September. This will mark the third consecutive year that the U of C has
sent students to this prestigious event. Stay tuned for more details.
