THE ASET ISSUE
APEGGA to Make Presentation to
Standing policy Committee

As many of you are already aware, the recently renamed Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals in Alberta (ASET) has requested legislation that will empower it to license applied science, information and engineering technologists to practice technology independently in Alberta.

APEGGA and nine other professional regulators, known as the Pro10, will be responding to both the name change and to ASET’s request for legislation. Pro10 and APEGGA will both make presentations to the Provincial Government’s Standing Policy Committee on Education and Employment at a meeting on Tuesday, March 21st at the Legislature in Edmonton. While the meeting is not open to the public, all Government MLAs are welcome to attend.

We will offer to Government an alternative solution to ASET’s proposal. While it is a solution that will acknowledge and address the concerns of ASET Members, it is also a solution that will maintain standards, protect the public and ensure that the practice of engineering and of technology are not separated but remain regulated under a single Act, The Engineering, Geological and Geophysical Professions Act.

APEGGA Council will provide an email update to Members sometime following the March 21st meeting to advise Members of the status of these discussions and the progress, if any, of ASET’s request for separate legislation and status as a regulator of applied science, information and engineering technology.

Please forward this copy of the e-PEGG to any of your colleagues who have not chosen to be on our e-mail distribution list or encourage them to check the website for further information as it becomes available.
