Canada's first wireless technology centre is looking for
a few great ideas to help turn into wireless technology success
stories. April 14 is the deadline for business plan submissions
to Leapfrog, a contest put on by the Network for Emerging
Wireless Technologies, or NEWT.
NEWT has issued a call to business ventures with annual revenues
under $1 million to submit their plans for a wireless device,
application or system idea "burning a hole in your imagination."
NEWT and its network of partners will work with three winners
over six months to move the ideas towards the marketplace.
The prize, valued at $30,000 per winner, includes free access
to NEWT's high-tech test facility, technical development advice,
business mentoring and venture capital contact.
"Leapfrog will offer a supportive environment to make
a technology leap forward over market competition," says
Duane Sniezek, P.Eng., NEWT lab director. "We aim to
marry great ideas with our live-air test lab and technical
know-how."
Wireless technology is emerging as a key driver of prosperity,
which makes the contest even more pertinent. Says Mr. Sniezek:
"A wireless everything world is arriving, and NEWT's
test centre can help companies and ideas realize market potential
by working toward product interoperability, lowering development
costs and being first to market with new wireless products."
NEWT was established in Calgary in 2002 with the support of
eight founding industry members, Western Economic Diversification
Canada and the Alberta Government. It's a division of TRLabs,
Canada's largest research consortium, representing 54 government,
university and industry members. A panel of industry and wireless
sector leaders will select and announce Leapfrog winners by
April 30.
