Practice Review Board Explains
Process For Reinstatement

BY RAY CHOPIUK, P.ENG.
Director of Professional Practice

In the event that your registration as an APEGGA member ceases at some point, you may want to know what's required to get it reinstated.

First, there are a number of reasons why your registration could cease. You might choose to voluntarily resign because you are no longer practicing in Alberta. Your registration could be cancelled because of failure to pay your annual dues or for failure to submit a detailed record of your activities as required under the Continuing Professional Development program. Incidentally, either of the latter two scenarios would only occur after repeated notices.

If more than seven years elapse after your registration ceases, you would apply to APEGGA's Board of Examiners. For less than seven years, your application would go to APEGGA's Practice Review Board. The PRB’s application form is available on APEGGA's website at www.apegga.org/Regulatory/pdf/CPD/ReinstatementApplication.pdf. Historically, the vast majority of applications that APEGGA receives are directed to the PRB.

In reviewing an application, the Practice Review Board determines whether there will be any conditions to be met before it reinstates your membership. In general, an application received less than two years after registration ceases would be approved with no conditions attached if no conduct matters have arisen. The same applies if you have maintained equivalent professional registration in another jurisdiction during the lapse (of any length).

Other applications received between two and seven years are assessed for the quality and length of experience during and prior to the registration lapse, supported by letters of reference. Insufficient recent experience could lead the PRB to require a period of practice under the supervision of a professional member, for example. Additionally, the Registration Department may assess certain reinstatement fees.

Lastly, if your registration is cancelled as a result of APEGGA disciplinary proceedings, you would apply to APEGGA Council to be reinstated.
