U of A Engineering Announces Major Support

Two heavy hitters in the APEGGA permit holder roster made major University of Alberta Faculty of Engineering funding announcements, last month.

Over the next decade, Talisman Energy Inc. will donate $1 million in scholarships for engineering students. And Stantec Consulting Inc. announced a $300,000 to establish the Stantec Lecture Theatre, support the Killiam Centre for Advanced Studies, and create the Stantec Academic Excellence Scholarships.

The Talisman Engineering Academic Excellence Scholarships and the Talisman Engineering Scholarships will have a value of $2,500 each. The University of Alberta will provide matching funds to increase their value to approximately the cost of tuition for one year.

Dr. Jim Buckee, president and CEO of Talisman, said: “Our company is looking for problem-solvers, innovators, and people who like to be technically proficient. These scholarships are part of Talisman’s commitment to the engineering profession in Alberta.”

The academic excellence scholarships will be awarded to 20 students with superior academic achievement entering the first year of the undergraduate program in the Faculty of Engineering. The Talisman Engineering Scholarships will be available to 20 second-year engineering students with a GPA of 7.0 or higher, with preference given to those registered in energy-related programs such as petroleum, mechanical and chemical engineering. The first scholarships will be awarded in September 2005.

The Stantec Lecture Theatre, meanwhile, is a 100-seat, multimedia quality learning environment located in the Engineering Teaching & Learning Complex. The Killiam Centre for Advanced Studies will be a home for graduate and postdoctoral study and research. The centre will provide space, resources, and support for these students to meet for academic, research, and community pursuits.

Each Stantec Academic Excellence Scholarship will have a minimum value of $5,000 and will be awarded to Alberta high school graduates with superior academic achievement.

Tony Franceschini, P.Eng., president and CEO of Stantec, said: “At Stantec we understand the value of post secondary education and the importance of providing high tech learning environments for students. On behalf of our employees, we are proud to contribute to the education of the future leaders in engineering.”
