NEWS RELEASE

Alberta Environment Announces changes
in management of contaminated Petroleum
Storage Tanks

Effective June 9, 2006

All petroleum storage tank environmental site assessment reports must be signed by a member of the Association of Professional engineers, geologists, geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA) before they are submitted to Alberta Environment.

Each report will be screened by Alberta Environment and ranked according to its potential to impact human health and safety, and the environment. A professional APEGGA member is required to oversee reporting, management, and cleanup on all petroleum storage tank sites.

This process will replace the written feedback, including comfort letters, issued by Alberta Environment on environmental site assessment reports.

Additionally, Alberta Environment will introduce remediation certificates for petroleum storage tanks in the fall. Certificates are intended to provide an incentive to clean-up contaminated petroleum storage tank sites.
