Born in the Czech Republic, Herbert Quoika Stanka, P.Eng., came to Canada from Vienna in 1953, spending several years working in the manufacturing industry in Western Canada. Mr. Quoika-Stanka died Feb. 28 at the age of 82.
Discovering his talents resided in inventing new machinery and in stream-lining workflow procedures, he enrolled at the University of Alberta and obtained a degree in mechanical engineering.
Upon completion of his degree, Mr. Quoika-Stanka began working as an instructor in the Mechanical Industrial Engineering Department at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, later becoming the program head. While still employed at NAIT, Mr. Quoika-Stanka completed a bachelor of education degree, as he felt strongly about the importance of good teaching methods. He retired from NAIT in 1991.
Mentoring students was a very important part of life for Mr. Quoika-Stanka. He frequently met with engineers in the industries, to ensure that his students had the right curriculum to qualify for good positions in their chosen field.
Mr. Quoika-Stanka was a volunteer with ASET and for many years a member of its board of examiners. His work for ASET was recognized with letters of appreciation.
Mr. Quoika-Stanka is survived by his wife, Betty, and daughter, Wanda.
