Memory Marshall, P.Geol., of Calgary, was diagnosed with a rare form of pregnancy-related
cancer, shortly after giving birth to her first child. She passed away just 16
months later in early 2007.
Her husband founded Hockey for the Cure in her honour. The tournament is a fundraiser for the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and the Alberta Cancer Foundation, and it takes place Sept. 7 to 9 in Calgary — about when members will be receiving this edition of The PEGG.
At press time, the event had raised a third of its $150,000 goal. “The response to the event has been amazing,” Lyall Marshall said in a news release late last month. He established the tournament after his wife’s death on Jan. 9.
“It’s phenomenal to see people stepping up like they have. We still
have a lot of work to do before we reach our goal, but we think people will respond
in even bigger numbers to help us get there,” he said.
The fundraiser has attracted plenty of media attention, and people from as far
away as Germany have answered the call for donations. The Aug. 24 e-PEGG promoted
the event.
