APEGGA Helps Alberta
Put a Hands-on Spin on Science

Young Albertans check out a specimen at one of last year’s Rock & Fossil Clinics.

Discover the inventor and innovator within during Science and Technology Week, Oct. 13-20. A variety of activities take to the malls, museums and other venues of Alberta, during the 2007 version of the week.

It’s a great opportunity for APEGGA members, their families and other members of the public to get real with science.

For those who want to take a “boulder” approach, join us on Oct. 20 for APEGGA’s annual Rock & Fossil Clinics. These are perfect for budding rock hounds to have their finds identified by geologists and university geology students.

Don’t have a favourite rock or fossil? No problem. Plenty of interesting specimens will be on display to examine and ask our volunteers about.

Edmonton’s clinic goes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the TELUS World of Science — Edmonton. Canmore’s clinic will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre.

If you’d like to volunteer to help out at a Rock & Fossil Clinic, you need to contact APEGGA.

For Red Deer north, contact Lindsay Malden at lmalden@apegga.org,

South of Red Deer, contact Anne Kelsey at akelsey@apegga.org or 403-262-7714 in Calgary.

Other activities include the second annual Iron Science Teacher competition, Chemistry in the Mall and the Festival of Science.

The Science and Technology Week website, www.scitechweek.gov.ab.ca, launches in October. There, you’ll be able to learn more about these activities and others scheduled in communities across Alberta.

The site, hosted by Alberta Advanced Education and Technology, will contain a calendar of events, activities for children, and profiles of science and technology professionals.
