Fall semester is more then halfway completed, and the undergraduate engineering students at the University of Alberta have been had at work balancing academics with extracurricular activities.
Past Events
From Sept. 11- 18, the Engineering Students’ Society ran the first-year
student orientation initiative, Geer 101. This introduction into the life of
an engineering student included a pool tournament and a barbeque, and all events
were well attended and appreciated.
On Sept. 22 the ESS joined with Shinerama to host a bus pull in support of the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Although the pull itself was cancelled due to bad weather, a raffle made the event a success nonetheless.
Engineering students and nursing students combined to enter a team called the Enginurses in the CIBC Run for the Cure, Oct. 1, in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. This is the second consecutive year the two faculties have combined, and participation has almost doubled.
From Oct. 19 to 22, the U of A engineering students were represented by a delegation at the Western Engineering Students’ Societies Team retreat and olympics. This weekend event combined the annual general meeting with opportunities for current and future leaders of our member societies to meet for workshops, open discussion and presentations on issues surrounding engineering student life.
The University of Alberta hosted an engineering competition on Nov. 4. Winners will be representing U of A engineering at the Western Engineering Competition, Jan. 24 to 28 in Vancouver.
Upcoming Events
The Engineering Hair Dye, Nov. 19, and Head Shave, Nov. 24, combine to be the
largest fundraising event ESS holds. Students, faculty and alumni are invited
to shave their heads to raise funds for the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
In 2006 the event raised over $26,000. This year we look to break that record. If you are interested in contributing, please see the address separate box with this column
Also part of this article is a contact address for those wanting to support the ESS anniversary. On Dec. 4, the ESS celebrates 87 years since its establishment.
If you have any historic material, photos, or memorabilia which could be shared, or if you are looking at getting involved as active alumni, please contact us.
