A distinguished group of speakers took to the stage throughout the afternoon, Oct. 19 in Edmonton, in celebration of 25 years of Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science and Technology.
Speakers were Gail Powley, P.Eng., WISEST vice-chair; Dr. Bill McBlain, senior associate vice-president of research, University of Alberta; Dr. Margaret-Ann Armour, founding vice-chair of WISEST; Dr. Greg Taylor, dean of the Faculty of Science; Edna Dach, director of science and technology, Elk Island School District; Dr. Peter Hackett, president and CEO of Alberta Ingenuity;
Dr. Denise Hemmings, WISEST program committee chair and assistant professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry; Dr. Tim Joseph, P.Eng., of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, and assistant professor, U of A Faculty of Engineering; Lynn Dafoe, Geol.I.T., WISEST Program Alumni (SET and Summer Research Programs) and now a PhD candidate in geology.
Letters of support were read from Gov.-Gen. Michaëlle Jean, Premier Ed Stelmach, Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel, NSERC President Suzanne Fortier, University of Alberta President Indira Samarasekera, and Lorne Babiuk, vice-president of research at the university, as well as from the company Weyerhaueser and many other supporters.
Premier Stelmach called WISEST “a shining example on how industry, government, and academia can collaborate to generate outstanding results and a brighter, more inclusive future — one where we all can take on exciting challenges and play a part in shaping our province’s future through science, technology and innovation.”
Over 200 people attended, including representatives of APEGGA, Alberta Ingenuity, Ledcor, Stantec, Syncrude, Enbridge, Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, TR Labs, Government of Alberta, the U of A faculties of Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences, Medicine and Dentistry, and Business, ATCO, Capital Health, Canadian Information and Processing Society, and many more.
For their financial support of WISEST and WISEST’s 25th anniversary celebrations, special thanks were given to the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering, and VP Research Office; NSERC; the Hole family; and VWR International. Thanks also went out the many volunteers and sponsors who made this event, and continue to make WISEST, such a great success.
