Mr. Jatinder (Jay) Singh Riat, P.Eng.

 

Mr. Jatinder Singh Riat, P.Eng., has been involved in community affairs his entire life,  improving people’s quality of life on both local and international levels. He graduated from Jadavpur University in Calcutta, India with a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering in 1966, received his M.Sc. in chemical engineering from the University of Alberta in 1970, and then received a Management Sciences Diploma from the University of Ottawa in 1972.

A retiree from Syncrude Canada Ltd., with over 30 years of experience in the oil sands industry, Mr. Riat is now a Senior Associate, Process Engineer with CoSyn Technology. He also opened his engineering business, Riat Energy Corporation, in 1997.

Mr. Riat is co-chair the Guru Nanak Dev Healing Garden project at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute and the founding director and a member of the board of trustees for the Guru Nanak Shrine Fellowship (GNSF).  GNSF is a worldwide organization for humanitarian service. As the national president of GNSF, Mr. Riat has led the community in raising $2 million to create a unique and tranquil environment for patients recovering from heart surgery.

For decades, Mr. Riat has been helping others during desperate times. In 1969, he sent funds from Edmonton to India for the Bihar Relief Fund and in 2004 he raised funds for tsunami relief for the Red Cross Society.  As part of GNSF, Mr. Riat has helped raise tens of thousands of dollars for donations of medical equipment to India, Pakistan and Zambia and for earthquake relief in India and El Salvador.
