This award is presented to Members of APEGGA in recognition of exceptional achievement in the early years of a professional career as an engineer, geologist or geophysicist.
Dr. Shelley Lissel, P.Eng., graduated with a B.Sc. with distinction in civil engineering from the University of Calgary (U of C) in 1997. She is now an Assistant Professor and the Associate Head, International in the Schulich School of Engineering’s Department of Civil Engineering at the U of C. She joined the department in 2001 after graduating with a PhD in structural engineering and being awarded a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada University Faculty Award.
In addition to her excellent work in the teaching and research aspects of her career, her enthusiasm and creativity as Associate Head, International in the administration of the international exchange programs have resulted in their expansion and revitalization. Dr. Lissel’s direction has led to an increase in the number of international universities with which the Schulich School of Engineering has exchange programs, and revived interest and enrolment in several programs that were in danger of cancellation. In 2005, she was honoured with the Schulich School of Engineering’s Faculty Service Award for her outstanding contributions.
Dr. Lissel has provided further service to the U of C as a member of several committees and a representative at many events. Her dedication to the profession has extended beyond the university as well. She has served on the board of directors of The Masonry Society since 2004 and on two technical committees of the Canadian Standards Association, which provide guidelines to the masonry industry for the safe and economic design and construction of masonry structures.
Her demonstrated leadership is also evidenced through her work in the community.
She has been a presenter at the Calgary Science Network Elementary and Junior
High Science Symposiums, a volunteer for APEGGA Elementary Science Nights during
National Engineering & Geoscience Week, a judge at the Calgary Science Fair,
a guest speaker at local schools, and an active participant in community events,
including Explore IT and Women in Engineering Day.
