National Science and Technology Week 1997 Fast Approaching In celebration of National Science and Technology Week, Oct. 17 to 26, APEGGA is sponsoring and hosting events across the province. Corporations, professional and industry associations, government, educators and others are joining together to showcase the innovation and creativity of Alberta's science and technology community. The ten-day event also encourages youth to consider the exciting career opportunities available. So, come join the festivities and help celebrate the importance and relevance of science and technology in our everyday lives. See you there!

National Science and Technology Week 1997 Kick-off Event
Edmonton Space & Science Centre and Calgary Science Centre
9:30 a.m. - 12 noonAPEGGA is teaming up with the Edmonton Space and Science Centre, Calgary Science Network and the Calgary Science Centre to kick off National Science and Technology Week 1997. Students from both cities will be bused in for a half-day of science fun. The two sites will be linked by a video connection so students from both cities can compete in a friendly hands-on challenge. As well, organizations from Edmonton and Calgary's science and technology communities will be present to provide experiments and demonstrations for students and adults alike.

Oct. 20
Submission deadline for province-wide Whimsical Machines Challenge
Sponsored by APEGGA and Science Alberta Foundation, students throughout the province will complete a hands-on challenge based on inventing whimsical machines. Younger students will explore concepts of energy transfer by creating an imaginative paper mural that show how a series of machines work together to produce a wacky result. And, students from Grades 4 to 12 will construct an energy transfer machine from household materials that raises a flag to at least four inches ."
All submissions must be received by 5 p.m. at the Science Alberta Foundation office in Calgary.

Second Annual Science Olympics
Fort McMurray Oil Sands Interpretive Centre 12:30 p.m.
4:30 p.m. ( Awards presented.)An interschool competition for students in Grade 7 or 8. Teams will compete in a series of problem-solving events using scientific principles and imagination.
