CSEG/CSPG/APEGGA Liaison Committee

Neil Rutherford, P.Eng., P.Geoph., Chair

The past year saw the successful conclusion of several Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists/ Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists/APEGGA Liaison Committee issues. A new National Geology Syllabus was established under the guidance of APEGGA member Gordon Williams, P.Geol., PhD. Your Liaison Committee members worked hard to ensure the new syllabus reflected the various options within geoscience education today. The new syllabus was accepted by the APEGGA Board of Examiners at the end of last year and Al Schuld, P.Eng., saw to the creation and publication of three APEGGA information pamphlets entitled "Geology - Syllabus of Examinations", "Geophysics - Syllabus of Examinations" and "Geoscience Registration - Criteria and Instructions for making Application for Registration".

A Liaison Committee recommendation to Council, calling for modification to the amplification to Rule 10 in the Code of Ethics, led to minor additional changes to Rules 4, 6 and 9. These changes will be reflected in the next publication of the Code of Ethics manual.

During the year, the CSEG/CSPG/APEGGA Liaison Committee supported the Permit to Practice Task Force recommendation calling for reduced Permit to Practice fees for individual practitioners. The proposals were not approved and remain an issue with this Committee.

Activities in 1996 will include monitoring progress of the newly created Canadian Council of Professional Geoscientists (CCPG) Task Force, which has a mandate "to provide representation and coordination for the provincial/territorial associations of professional geoscientists on national and international issues, including national standards, mobility, human resources issues and public awareness". This Committee notes and applauds APEGGA's strong and proactive position regarding the establishment of this task force
