"The
award recognizes professionals in academia or industry who have
conducted innovative research in engineering, geology or geophysics,
and that research has been successfully applied to improve our economic
and social well being.
The
award is named after the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Science
and Engineering Research (AHFSER).
The
award may be made to an individual or a research team.
EVALUATION
CONSIDERATIONS
- Recipient
must be an APEGGA member
- Has
conducted the research in Alberta, though it may have been field
tested or applied elsewhere
- Scope
and/or complexity of the research problem
- Degree
of innovation2
- Rigour
and originality of methodology
- Evidence
of the quality of research through:
- Recognition by peers
- Patents
- Dissemination
of the research through one of the following:
- Presentation to professional and technical societies
- Published papers and reports in academic or trade journals
- Evidence
of the impact of the research as measured by at least one of the
following:
- Use of research results by the engineering, geology or geophysics
professions and/or the public
- Further research, development and application by others
- Transfer of the research into commercial products or services
- The
research may have been applied by the nominee(s) or by other professionals.
However, nominees who have directed the process from problem to
idea to hypothesis to research to application and evaluation will
have an advantage in the judging process.
THEME
The intent of this award is to recognize and increase awareness
of the excellent applied research in Alberta, and through that,
encourage collaboration among professionals in academia and industry.
DEFINITION
For the purpose of this award, engineering, geological and geophysical
research shall be defined as: The application of innovative methods
and approaches to solve an identified problem which results in novel
products, processes, and/or services provided by the engineering,
geology or geophysics professions.
REQUIREMENTS
Complete the nomination form in full and attach documents describing
the nominee and his/her achievements which, in the opinion of the
nominator, qualify the nominee for the award, together with such
supporting evidence as the nominator may wish the Honours and Awards
Committee and AHFSER to consider.
