TOPIC:
"Methane Gas and Microturbines"

The City of Calgary, Solid Waste Services is committed to the reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, protection of the environment and ensuring public welfare through sustainable development.

In recent years, Solid Waste Services has been evaluating the amount of landfill gas (LFG), and in particular its methane component, which is emitted from each of its three active landfills. This study identified the potential for the mitigation of landfill gas as these sites are recognized as major contributors to the City's total GHG inventory.

In June 2001, Solid Waste Services, ENMAX, PanCanadian Energy, and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) entered into an agreement to conduct a feasibility assessment for the collection and potential utilization of LFG at the Spy Hill, East Calgary and Shepard Landfill Sites in Calgary. The study involves LFG generation modeling, on-site LFG recovery testing, evaluation of a microturbine operating on LFG at one of the test sites and a renewable energy assessment (wind and/or solar power) for each site.

This assessment is the first step of a multiphase, multiyear project to mitigate GHG emissions from the City's active landfill sites, with completion of the initial assessment expected in July 2002. With the results of this assessment in hand, the City has committed to move forward with the design and implementation of landfill gas collection infrastructure and explore renewable energy source development. Beyond this, the City and its partners will attempt to utilize the landfill gas and renewable power to its fullest to develop three sustainable landfill sites independent of the power grid and generate saleable heat and electricity via cutting-edge generation technology.
