TOPIC: " Risk Management 101"

Risk Management has increasingly become a "line item" for engineering and geological practice and projects. This introductory course will show that risk management is not about a check mark on a punch list, but is mostly about process--a disciplined and comprehensive process to map and manage "uncertainty" by identifying, valuing and mitigating risks, but also, in capturing and valuing opportunities. Opportunities such as better strategies, improved tactics and implementations, reduced costs, shortened schedules, better managed liabilities and enhanced valuations to the potentially impacted stakeholders. Most of all, risk management process serves as a basis for problem framing, assessing value and communicating on practice and project decisions.

The course will begin with risk and governance, the stepped risk management process, risk and quality decisions, the goals and benefits of risk management and an understanding of risk management maturity. This includes a look at processes within risk management and decision analysis and where and how risk management can be used in project management. It will borrow from and align with risk management scope and discipline found in PMI framing for project management. There is an introduction to some simple tools to quantify uncertainty.

The seminar encourages and expects active participation, discussion and interaction from the attendees.

Pre-Registration and advance payments are required. Seating is limited and registrations will be dealt with on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please call the Calgary APEGGA office at 262-7714 to register before Friday, November 29, 2002. The Calgary Branch now accepts Visa, MasterCard, or American Express. TOPIC: The Leadership Imperative: Awakening the Leader Within

WHERE: Ramada Hotel & Conference Centre - Pitcher Plant Room
(Room is accessible from north side of hotel - take stairs to upper level), 11834 Kingsway

Today's engineers and geoscientists face many challenges: changing technologies, global competition and the growing demands of clients, employees, shareholders and stakeholders. A new kind of leader is needed; one who thrives on change, who fosters innovative environments and who is able to lead successfully into the third millennium.

But what distinguishes exceptional leadership from ordinary leadership? It is not simply an awareness of practices, vision, mission and values alone. The key to unlocking the leader within is a passion and enthusiasm that originates from the heart. In this evening session, we hope you will find some "kindling" that may help allow you to re-ignite the fire of understanding and passion for yourself, your work and for those you lead.

This session, through a series of lectures, dialogues, group discussion and self-assessments, will help you to understand leadership and management and why both are important. You will understand the concept of leadership as it applies to personal development, team building and organizational development; and you will gain a greater understanding of your personal vision and mission and formulate plans for approaching specific issues and challenges affecting you, your position and your business.

Pre-Registration and advance payments are required. The seminar limit is 50 and registrations will be dealt with on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please call Shirley Layne at the APEGGA office (426-3990) to register or via email - slayne@apegga.org. The deadline to register is Thursday, November 28 - registration fee is non-refundable after this date. We accept Visa, MasterCard, or American Express. Please note: A light snack will be provided.

IN KEEPING WITH THE SPIRIT OF THE SEASON, WE ARE REQUESTING ATTENDEES TO BRING AN ITEM FOR THE BOOD BANK TO THE MEETING. WE APPRECIATE EVERYONE'S GENEROSITY.
