TOPIC: " Risk Management 101"
Risk Management has increasingly become a "line item" for engineering and geological practice and projects. This introductory course will show that risk management is not about a check mark on a punch list, but is mostly about process--a disciplined and comprehensive process to map and manage "uncertainty" by identifying, valuing and mitigating risks, but also, in capturing and valuing opportunities. Opportunities such as better strategies, improved tactics and implementations, reduced costs, shortened schedules, better managed liabilities and enhanced valuations to the potentially impacted stakeholders. Most of all, risk management process serves as a basis for problem framing, assessing value and communicating on practice and project decisions.
The course will begin with risk and governance, the stepped risk management process, risk and quality decisions, the goals and benefits of risk management and an understanding of risk management maturity. This includes a look at processes within risk management and decision analysis and where and how risk management can be used in project management. It will borrow from and align with risk management scope and discipline found in PMI framing for project management. There is an introduction to some simple tools to quantify uncertainty.
The seminar encourages and expects active participation, discussion and interaction from the attendees.
