GUEST SPEAKER: Derek Gratz, CEO, WestLink Innovation Network

TOPIC: From the Garage to the Academic Lab and on to the Market

Early Stage Technology Transfer, Development, and Commercialization in Western Canada

Derek Gratz is an industrial product designer who has worked in California and Alberta taking early stage ideas from concept to finished products on the market. He has worked with the Canadian Olympic Luge team, numerous western Canadian start-up companies, and major research institutions. Derek will share his experiences in working with garage technology entrepreneurs, academic inventors, and seed stage venture capital projects.

As President and CEO of WestLink Innovation Network, he and his team work to promote and facilitate connections between innovations developed at publicly funded institutions and industrial partners who can take those ideas to the market. Derek will give an overview of the largely untapped opportunities that exist to capitalize on the cutting edge research and applied development work that is being done at WestLink's 25 Member organizations, and how WestLink is developing programs and resources to enhance collaborations between its members and industry. WestLink is also working to develop a pool of skilled technology transfer professionals through its Technology Commercialization Internship Program. In this initiative, interns across Western Canada work with practising professionals as mentors in technology transfer, early stage technology companies, and venture capital firms.
