This award is presented to members of APEGGA who have
made exemplary contributions to
teaching and learning at a recognized post-secondary teaching establishment in
Alberta.
Dr. Naser El-Sheimy, P.Eng., started with the Faculty of Engineering, University of Calgary, in 1998. After his first year of teaching, he received the 1999 Geomatics Engineering Students’ Society Professor of the Year award. He also received the award in 2002 and 2003. The award recognizes teaching excellence, service to students and overall character as voted on, and presented by, fourth-year undergraduate students in the Department of Geomatics Engineering. The 2002 and 2003 awards are truly indicative of his teaching excellence, in that he did not teach fourth-year courses in those years.
Dr. El-Sheimy has also received several
other teaching awards. He was presented
with the Department Teaching Excellence
Award in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. In
2002, he was also the recipient of the
Faculty of Engineering’s Teaching Excellence
Award and the University of Calgary’s
Students’ Union Teaching Excellence Award.
His teaching style is very effective. He is well-organized and his notes are thorough with plenty of examples. He has an incredible understanding of his courses’ content, which is evident by his authoritative teaching style.
Dr. El-Sheimy has taught one of the most difficult courses in the department’s undergraduate program, a course that has a reputation of being difficult in which to excel.Despite the difficult content and heavy workload, Dr. El-Sheimy’s organized and methodical style enabled his students to understand the concepts and grasp a working knowledge of the material.
Down-to-earth and ethical with a good sense of humour, Dr. El-Sheimy’s support and encouragement motivates his students.Through his courses for, and supervision of, graduate students, he is teaching the next generation of university instructors and these teachers of the future could not ask for a better example.
Dr. El-Sheimy consistently receives excellent
evaluations from students and has
developed a special web page and extensive
lecture notes for his courses. He has given
presentations to professional organizations
and industry, one-day demonstrations for
high-school students and has been invited to
deliver courses at foreign institutions.
Dr. El-Sheimy has established and helped to
fund undergraduate and graduate awards
and has always participated in Geomatics
Engineering Career Day, the Faculty of
Engineering’s Engineering Week and the
University of Calgary’s Campus Fair. He is
also a member of the Faculty’s
Undergraduate Studies Committee and has
been the Interim Head of the Department of
Geomatics Engineering and the
Department’s Associate Head of
Undergraduate Studies.
